La Laguna
4 km west of
Santa Cruz and with a population of well over 125,000, La Laguna is Tenerife's
second most important city. It is the old Capital of the Island
and still the cultural and religious capital - due to the fact that it lodges
the San Fernando University and the province's Bishopric. The whole city
is full of outstanding architectural monuments, palaces and traditional
houses of earlier centuries.
Las Galletas
Las Galletas
is situated close to Costa del Silencio and is a typical Canarian fishing
village, where you can buy fresh fish daily. Although a popular tourist destination
for Spanish visitors, other nationalities have taken up residence here because
of the relaxed way of life. The town centre is largely pedestrianised and
has a good selection of coffee bars and restaurants.
Los Abrigos
Los Abrigos
is a typical Canarian fishing village famous in the south of Tenerife for
its many fish restaurants. The area has seen developments slowly increasing
to accommodate demand from residents who wish to live in a coastal area
that has a quiet and tranquil atmosphere.
Los Cristianos
Los
Cristianos is a bustling resort and the second most popular destination
next to Las Americas. What used to be a tiny fishing village has grown into
a main town centre with a busy port and a good selection of shops, bars
and restaurants for residents and tourists alike. The two main beaches are
popular with sun worshippers and swimmers and offer a varied selection of
water sports. During 2007 Los Cristianos under
went major refurbishment and is now a first class resort.
Los Gigantes
Los Gigantes is situated on the west coast of Tenerife and gets its name
from the giant cliffs that dominate the area. Very much a tourist resort
with a good selection of hotels, apartments, shops, bars and restaurants.
The black sand beach is a favourite with swimmers and sun worshippers.
Playa de las Americas
Playa de
las Americas is a lively and vibrant holiday resort, popular with party
goers young and old who enjoy the nightlife. By day the town is bustling
with shoppers and sun lovers. By night this town comes alive with music
and dance till the early hours. Las Americas boasts beautiful beaches, with
a wide selection of water sports, restaurants that cater for all tastes,
bars and nightclubs offering great entertainment. The marina at Puerto Colon
is where a number of sailing excursions leave from including whale and dolphin
trips.
Playa Paraiso
Playa Paraiso is an up and coming area that is still undergoing development
and boasts 5 Star hotels and stunning villas. Its natural rocky coastline
has enabled developers the opportunity to provide a Lido swimming area with
snack bars and sunbeds. As with most towns and villages in Tenerife, Playa
Paraiso also benefits from stunning views.
Playa San Juan
Playa San Juan, like Los Gigantes is situated on the west coast. This small
friendly town has become popular with tourists but has still managed to
maintain its Spanish atmosphere and has a working fishing port. The natural
beaches are ideal for sun lovers and swimmers.
Playa de la Arena
Playa de la Arena is popular with both residents and tourists, the area
has a natural black sand beach and a man-made beach and a number of hotels,
bars and restaurants.
Puerto de la Cruz
Unlike too many Spanish resorts, Puerto de la Cruz is no concrete jungle.
It has its own long history as a major port for the Orotava Valley and as
a fishermen's haven. The old part, is
a network of tree lined avenidas, shady plazas and
steps running from one level to another. Many of the fine old houses with
their distinctive Canarian balconies have survived. La Paz, the most recent
development on the outskirts of town, is an example of what can be done
with a new development. Loro Parque is also here, which no one should miss.
San Eugenio
San Eugenio (Alto and Bajo), part of Las Americas, the lower area is bustling
with shops, bars and restaurants, the upper part of San Eugenio offers fantastic
views, luxury accommodation, bars, restaurants, Aqualand (water park) and
Siam Park (Tenerife’s newest attraction) is a short
distance away. San Eugenio Alto offers peace and tranquility although not
recommended for those who don’t like hills.
Torviscas (Alto and Bajo)
Torviscas is situated between San Eugenio and Fañabe and is popular with
both residents and tourists. The recent opening of the Gran Sur Shopping
Centre with its seven screen cinema, supermarket, shops, bars and restaurants
is an added bonus to this area. The sea and mountain views from Torviscas
Alto are stunning and well worth viewing.
