Tenerife Attractions
Tenerife attractions are a great way of keeping the whole family entertained during your holiday and as you might expect, there are plenty to choose from including sightseeing tours, wildlife parks, boat trips and water parks.
The most popular Tenerife attraction is Mount Teide which is situated at the heart of the island and is the highest peak in Spain at around 3718m (12,198ft). Tours are available as a full day or half day coach trip. The journey takes you through Spain’s highest village Vilaflor and through some spectacular landscapes. On arrival at Mount Teide’s visitor centre you can take the cable car to the top of the volcano, enjoy refreshments in the café and shop for souvenirs. There are some fantastic photo opportunities on this excursion.
Another very popular attraction in Tenerife is Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz. The park is famous for its fabulous collection of parrots, but is also home to many other animals and birds including gorillas, big cats, penguins and pelicans. The dolphin, whale and sea lion shows are great fun to watch.
Jungle Park is set high up on the hillside of south Tenerife and can be accessed via free buses from various hotels in Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. This Tenerife attraction is home to many species of big cats, primates and reptiles living in an environment that replicates their natural habitat. There is also a large collection of exotic birds and a bird of prey show.
Siam Park is a water theme park and one of the newest Tenerife attractions to open in the South. This is no ordinary water park though... Built with a Thai theme, the park has a floating market and Buddha statues. All the rides have been cleverly designed to blend in with the environment and landscaping, and vary in speed and excitement. See this page for more Tenerife attractions.

Sensatori Tenerife - Editors Review
Having read a mixed bag of reviews about Thomson’s Sensatori hotel in Tenerife I decided it was time to find out for myself what all the fuss was about. I booked one week’s holiday for myself and my husband to celebrate our wedding anniversary in February 2012.
To make the most of our holiday we booked the ‘full board plus package’ this included breakfast, lunch and dinner with drinks. Airport transfers are included at no extra cost, however as we were treating ourselves we booked the taxi transfers for an extra £80 return.
On arrival at the airport in Tenerife we were met by the Thomson rep from the hotel and escorted to our awaiting taxi. The journey to the Sensatori Tenerife hotel took approximately 50 minutes. On first impressions the hotel looked every bit as impressive as it does in the advertisements, modern, luxurious and not pretentious. The entrance and reception are so pristine that it sparkles from the floor upwards. The concierge and receptionist were very friendly and helpful. So far so good!
The room was clean and airy with an oversized double bed, sofa, TV and ipod docking station (not much use if, like us, you don’t possess either an ipod or iphone, but I guess they are catering for the masses). The bathroom was absolutely stunning with twin sinks, bath and rain shower. I had read comments on Tripadvisor and there were a few negative comments about the rain shower because you can’t avoid getting your hair wet! My advice to these people is ‘try a shower cap’!
We were lucky enough to get a south facing room with beautiful views of the sea and La Gomera. I had read that some people had been disappointed with their rooms because they had a limited sea view, however is does state this on Thomson’s website when booking.
On our first evening we ventured down to the Pangea Restaurant which gets very mixed reviews about the standard of food served and the atmosphere. This is one of four restaurants on the complex that are included in the full board service. It’s essentially a self service buffet restaurant; however you can opt for foods that are cooked while you wait. We opted for the self service on this occasion. The food was adequate ranging from a cold buffet to hot casseroles and a selection of breads. For desert there was a selection of fresh fruit, ice cream and pastries. The atmosphere was typical of what you get in ‘all inclusive’ hotels. All in all we enjoyed the experience and the food. We ate at this restaurant several times during our stay although the menu didn’t vary much from one day to the next.
After a comfortable first night’s sleep (one of the best I have ever had in a hotel bed) we made our way to the buffet breakfast which is served in the main restaurant. The food was delicious especially the omelettes that are cooked to order. After breakfast we decided to have a wander around the hotel. This was our first opportunity to have a proper look around the hotel and its grounds. We weren’t disappointed, it was absolutely stunning and we were glad we had chosen to stay at the Sensatori Tenerife.
If you fancy splashing out there are another three restaurants on the complex that are not included in the ‘all inclusive’ packages. You have to book your table and this can be done via computers that are available throughout the complex. We ate at the Italian restaurant on our last night. The food was incredible and worth paying for.
The hotel offers several spa treatments and various sporting activities including a gym (at additional cost). However, we didn’t participate in any of these activities, but from what we saw of the treatment rooms and gym they looked every bit as modern and luxurious as you would expect.
I cannot comment on the children’s facilities and activities from a personal point of view. However, I did talk to some guests with children, who seemed perfectly happy with the facilities on offer. There is a children’s pool with slides, water jets and a pirate ship. A playhouse with sensory nursery and a variety of daily activities to keep children up to the age of 12 entertained for hours. I believe the playhouse is run by experienced child care staff ensuring the good conduct and safety of the younger guests! The only negative I heard was that the hotel wasn’t very pushchair friendly.
The Sensatori resort has five swimming pools altogether including an ‘adult only’ pool, a family pool and an infinity pool (said to be the largest in Europe). There is also an ‘adult only’ pool on the ‘Red Level’ which is only for guests who are staying on the ‘Red Level’. Sun beds are plentiful and there is no need to reserve them before breakfast, in fact if you do place a towel on a sun bed to reserve it, it will get removed.
The Bali beds cost an additional 50 Euros per day, initially I thought this was a bit expensive and explained why there was nobody on them. However I later discovered that you can get up to four people on them and you get bottles of water and towels provided as well as waiter service. So, for a family of four or two couples holidaying together it’s a luxury you could afford even if it’s just for one day.
The location of the hotel its self is a far cry from the bustling resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. Alcala is a traditional Canarian town with a few street side cafés and bars to while away a couple of hours. There are very few souvenir shops and the town in virtually untouched by commercial tourism. The Sunday market is small but if you want to pick up a handcrafted souvenir it’s the place to go. We bought some lovely hand-made candles here for just a few Euros. There is a lovely walk along the sea front from just outside the hotel and a small sheltered black sand beach.
You can book excursions at the hotel reception including a half day or full day tour to Mount Teide and a full day trip to Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz. We got a taxi to Los Gigantes, which is only a few miles up the road from the hotel. It is quite a hilly resort with a marina where you can take boat trip or participate in water sports. There are street-side cafes and bars and a few souvenir shops to browse around. There is also a small but very busy beach.
To summarize, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Sensatori Tenerife resort. We were happy relaxing on the sun beds by the pool, having the occasional swim and enjoying a glass of Sangria at one of the hotel bars. Holiday are what you make them and we made our holiday special, doing what we wanted to do and not getting involved in hotel activities. We had a wonderful holiday in one of Tenerife’s best hotels and will definitely be returning.
A word of caution, Sensatori Tenerife is a cashless hotel so anything you drink, eat or participate in that isn’t included in your package holiday is charged to your room for payment when you check out, so it’s a good idea to keep a record of these extra’s to avoid any nasty shocks or misunderstandings on your last day. A cup of coffee in the hotel is 3.50 Euros, however if you go to a Spanish café in the local town it will cost much less. A. P, UK Editor of LoveTenerife
